Anna, by New York-based photographer, Yelena Yemchuk is a personal documentation of her best friend Annamaria captured over the past 20 years. The authentic, genuine female and powerful gaze tells the story of a timeless friendship between two women.
Yelena Yemchuk was born in Kiev, and immigrated to the United States with her parents, when she was eleven. She studied at Parsons School of Design in New York and Art Center in Pasadena.
She has been taking pictures since she was 18 mostly street photography; or set-up narrative, cinematic scenarios and later she made the foray into fashion photography.
It was also at the age of 18 when Yemchuk encountered Anna who started working in the same restaurant. The beginnings are described by Yemchuk as “ a muse situation” which began turning into a friendship during a trip to Anna’s hometown Alba in Italy. Shooting sessions took place irregularly during the last 20 years and the idea of the book came about, when Yemchuk was organizing negatives.
Our friendship isn’t a by-product of the pictures; our friendship informs the pictures.
